Badee Al Oud Black Exposed: A Gourmand That Contains No Oud

Lattafa’s Badee Al Oud range has a name that promises oud, and this unisex bottle is the one that does not deliver it. Toffee, olibanum and pink pepper lead the way. Orris, cocoa and Healingwood carry the middle, and vanilla, Edenolide and labdanum bring up the rear. The fragrance comes in a 100 ml eau de parfum.

Look through the pyramid, top, heart and base, and you will find no oud. For a fragrance from a family named after it, that is a bold omission.

Ingredient Layers

  • Top Notes: Olibanum, Toffee, Pink Pepper.
  • Middle Notes: Orris, Cocoa, Healingwood.
  • Base Notes: Vanilla, Edenolide, Labdanum.

Four of the nine listed items are not raw materials in the ordinary sense. Toffee and cocoa are accords assembled by the perfumer, and Healingwood and Edenolide are trade names for specific ingredients, something rarely printed on a pyramid.

Quick Read
  • Character: Sugared cocoa and toffee wrapped around frankincense, ending on vanilla and amber. Dessert first, resin second.
  • Sweetness: Rated 8 out of 10, and it is the main personality of the scent.
  • Size: 100 ml. Concentration: eau de parfum. Gender: unisex.
  • Ideal conditions: Chilly weather and evenings, for anyone craving a sweet treat with a hint of smoke.
  • Reconsider if: The oud is the reason you are shopping. There is none in it.

The Smell, Step by Step

Right away the scent is both sweet and smoky. Toffee leads, olibanum pulls a dry resinous line through it, and pink pepper fizzes briefly on the surface.

Next comes the cocoa, dark and slightly bitter instead of creamy. Beside it, orris brings a cool, powdery dryness that keeps the chocolate from feeling heavy.

Beneath everything sits the patchouli-based Healingwood, which gives the sweetness an earthy footing. That footing is what separates a gourmand from a plain dessert.

Vanilla and labdanum bring the scent to a close, warm, resinous and sweet, with frankincense still faintly visible hours later.

Where the Oud Name Comes From

The name belongs to the whole range more than to any single bottle. Bade’e Al Oud loosely translates as the wonder of oud, and Lattafa has applied it to the family since 2020.

The original did contain oud. Oud for Glory, the 2020 debut of the range, carries oud wood at its core together with peony and caramel.

This bottle keeps the name and little else. Its vanilla and cocoa structure makes it a sweet gourmand, a different category altogether, so anyone buying without a sniff should understand that before checking out.

Healingwood, Demystified

Despite the label, Healingwood has nothing to do with timber. Its raw material is patchouli, Pogostemon cablin, and the stems and leaves are distilled and then refined until the useful portion is isolated.

Producing it is wasteful in the best sense of the word: an enormous quantity of plant matter becomes a tiny quantity of finished material.

The principal compound that remains is patchouli alcohol, which supplies a humid, earthy woodiness with a camphor-like lift. In effect, the wood at the centre of this fragrance is refined patchouli, and Oud for Glory also uses patchouli in its base, a shared thread between the two bottles.

Longevity and Application

Vanilla, labdanum and the patchouli-based material all release slowly. Labdanum, a weighty resin, forms the foundation of the entire base.

Cold weather is the right setting. Toffee, cocoa and vanilla gain weight in heat, and summer turns warm into heavy.

Restraint pays off. Sweet gourmands accumulate on skin over the day, and a fourth spray seldom makes one better.

Telling the Line Apart

Lattafa has released Badee Al Oud fragrances since 2020, and shoppers mix up the bottles constantly.

The distinction is simple once spelled out. Oud for Glory is an amber-woody fragrance with oud at its heart, and it is the one people usually picture first.

Badee Al Oud Black Exposed is a gourmand that borrows the family name. If someone asks for Badee Al Oud without further detail, they most likely want a different bottle.
